Beyonce, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, and Coldplay lead the finalists for the 2016 Billboard Touring Awards, presented by Ticketmaster, which will be announced today.
Now in its 13th year, the Billboard Touring Awards honor the artists, executives, companies and venues behind the most successful tours and events of the year. The awards are based primarily on box office data reported to Billboard Boxscore between Oct. 1, 2015, and Sept. 30, 2016.
Finalists for the Top Tour, which goes to the highest-grossing tour of the year, and Top Draw, for the act selling the most tickets in the period, are the same three acts: Beyonce for her Formation tour, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band for the River tour, and Coldplay for their Head Full of Dreams tour.
Finalists for Breakthrough, which goes to an act cracking the elite tours for the first time, are Adele, The Weeknd, and Twenty One Pilots. Scooter Braun, founder of SB Projects, will receive the Humanitarian Award, which recognizes the philanthropic efforts of a touring industry professional.
Brian Dunkleman (American Idol, season one) will host the 2016 Billboard Touring Awards, which will also feature a performance by hip-hop star Raury. This year’s event moves to Los Angeles for the first time and takes place Nov. 9 at The SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills, during the Billboard Touring Conference on Nov. 9 and 10.
Veteran Southern California promoter Brian Murphy of Goldenvoice/AEG Live will received the Golden Circle Award. Named for the industry lexicon for the “best seats in the house,” the Golden Circle Award is presented to an industry legend who has shown outstanding passion, professionalism, and commitment to presenting quality live entertainment over a lengthy career.
“2016 was a spectacular year for the touring industry, with a wealth of crowd-pleasing tours and events,” said Ray Waddell, executive director of Content and Programming for Touring and Live Entertainment, Billboard. “At the Billboard Touring Awards we’re proud to honor the hard-working and talented artists, producers, venues, managers, agents and promoters who created the shows that amazed, inspired and entertained us.”
Finalists for Top Comedy Tour, Amy Schumer, Kevin Hart and Michael McIntyre. Finalists for the Top Package award, which recognizes value in touring beyond the headliner for tours with three or more acts on the bill, include Justin Bieber’s Purpose Tour featuring Post Malone and Moxie Raia; Kenny Chesney’s Spread the Love Tour featuring Miranda Lambert, Sam Hunt and Old Dominion; and Luke Bryan’s Kill the Lights Tour featuring Little Big Town and Dustin Lynch.
In Top Boxscore, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band are a finalist for their stop at Croke Park in Dublin, along with Coldplay’s Wembley Stadium shows in London, and The Stone Roses’s Etihad Stadium shows in Manchester, UK.
Top Festival finalists include Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival, and Stagecoach Music Festival. Top Arena contenders include Madison Square Garden in New York City, Manchester Arena in Manchester, England and O2 Arena in London.
